How taxis work in Mallorca

Taxis in Mallorca are regulated by the Consell de Mallorca (the island council) and the individual town councils. The fleet is uniformly white, with a green roof-light when free, and runs on an official taximeter. Drivers pass a municipal exam covering the local street network and the published fare structure.

Each municipality issues its own licences, and most of the bigger tourist towns have their own dispatch cooperative — Taxi Calvià for Magaluf and Palmanova, Taxi Sóller for the Tramuntana coast, Taxi Manacor for the east, and so on. Tap “Call a taxi instead” on the map for the full list.

The fare structure

Rates are published yearly. They consist of a flag-fall, a per-kilometre rate, and a small number of supplements — airport pickup, late-night, public holidays and bulky luggage are the most common. The meter must be visible at all times, and the receipt itemises every charge.

• The minimum airport fare is set by the Consell de Mallorca each year.
• Card payment is mandatory in every licensed taxi.
• The taximeter — not the driver — determines the final fare.
• Inter-municipal trips run on the standard tariff; there is no “tourist” surcharge.

Why ranks are the safest choice

Hailing on the street works in Palma and the larger towns, but in resort areas the regulated supply concentrates at marked ranks. Walking to a rank gets you a vetted, licensed car every time. Apps come and go; the ranks have been in the same places for decades.
